This conference covers a large number of topics dealing with processes related to the formation of the spectral line profiles. From the point of view of the fundamental physics, the quantitative determination and analysis of the line profiles yields the information on atomic and molecular interactions that are present in all states of the matter. In applied physics, the analysis of the line profiles provides a tool for diagnosing density, temperature, pressure, and concentration of species in various media. These media, ionized or non-ionized, can be created and controlled in laboratories (neutral gases, lighting devices, technological torches, laser-produced plasmas, magnetically-confined plasmas, Z-pinch machines ...). They can also correspond to the natural media (astrophysical plasmas, planetary atmospheres).
